Introduction to Sleep and Rest (PSOM 1000)

Description:  This course introduces you to the basic human need of sleep and rest. You will learn about the importance of sleep and rest for a healthy life, sleep cycles, the history of sleep and common sleep disorders. You will be introduced to the field of sleep science and its relevance to other health professions. This course is open to the public as a health elective and is also a required course in the Polysomnography Technology A.A.S. program.
Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042

Fundamentals of Polysomnography (PSOM 1100)

Total Credits:  3   Lecture Credits:  2   Lab Credits:  1  
Description:  This course examines the scope of practice of a Polysomnographic Technologist and the vocational role within a team of sleep medicine professionals. You will learn about the practical and ethical considerations in providing service to patients with a focus on therapeutic communication, documentation and safety in the sleep laboratory. During laboratory time you will start learning to analyze sleep studies. Specific topics include sleep staging, recognition of abnormal sleep-related breathing patterns, and technical reporting. The course also requires touring an accredited sleep center and spending a nightshift observing the work of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT). Must be taken A-F.

Anatomy and Physiology of Sleep and Breathing (PSOM 1200)

Description:  In this course, you will learn neurological and respiratory structure and function as it relates to sleep across the lifespan. Topics include circadian sleep/wake rhythms and the bioelectrical signals generated within the body. An introduction to normal human sleep staging is also included. Course meets the first eight weeks of the term.
Prerequisites:  Admission to the Polysomnographic Technology Program, BIOL 2224 or BIOL 1127 and BIOL 1128

Pathophysiology and Classification of Sleep Disorders (PSOM 1300)

Total Credits:  2   Lecture Credits:  2  
Description:  In this course, you will explore the pathophysiology of sleep disorders across the lifespan. Topics take in the major categories of sleep disorders described the International Classification of Sleep Disorders and an introduction to common therapies, including positive airway pressure (PAP), supplemental oxygen, as well as pharmaceutical and surgical treatments. Emphasis will be placed on the effects of pathology and treatment on the polysomnographic recording. Course meets the second eight weeks of the term.
Prerequisites:  Admission to the Polysomnographic Technology Program, BIOL 2224 or BIOL 1127 and BIOL 1128

Instrumentation in Polysomnography (PSOM 1400)

Description:  In this course, you will learn the principles of electricity necessary for polysomnography, with emphasis on signal amplification and filtration, characteristics of waveforms, and recognition of artifacts. The laboratory focuses on the preparation of recording equipment and the patient for polysomnography, including calibrations, the use of ancillary equipment and the application of electrodes and other monitors. Course meets the first eight weeks of the term.

Monitoring and Introduction to Therapeutic Interventions (PSOM 1500)

Description:  In this course, you will learn the principles of monitoring and therapeutic interventions in Polysomnography. Theory concepts will be reinforced in the lab setting. Topics include the production of high-quality recordings and the principles of PAP titration and oxygen therapy. You will also learn to respond to recording artifacts and complications of PAP and oxygen therapies.

Sleep Lab Simulation (PSOM 1550)

Total Credits:  3   Lab Credits:  3  
Description:  This course prepares students for the internship experience by simulating sleep studies in the on-campus lab. You will prepare subjects for polysomnography by selecting and applying electrodes and other monitors, performing equipment and physiologic calibrations, and performing other Lights Out procedures. You will also practice scoring and documentation of sleep studies. Must be taken Pass/Fail.
Prerequisites:  PSOM 1000, PSOM 1100, PSOM 1200, and PSOM 1300

Polysomnography Theory Integration (PSOM 2000)

Total Credits:  4   Lecture Credits:  2   Lab Credits:  2  
Description:  This course requires synthesis of all previously learned sleep technology theory in preparation for taking the national registration exam upon graduation. You will review all of the fundamental knowledge and skills of a Sleep Technologist and advanced topics including mechanical ventilation, cardiac dysrhythmias, EEG effects, and pediatric sleep disorders. You will gain increasing expertise in the assessment of clinical sleep studies. Through individual appointments at accredited sleep centers you will observe and interact with physicians and other specialists as they assess and treat patients with sleep disorders. Must be taken A-F.

Internship 1 (PSOM 2010)

Total Credits:  4   Internship/Practicum Credits:  4
Description:  In this course, you will prepare patients for and initiate routine polysomnographic testing, produce high quality sleep study recordings, and work with patients throughout the night in the clinical sleep lab setting. You will learn to accurately score and document sleep studies, and apply therapeutic interventions as ordered by a physician. Emphasis will be on performing accurate and timely setups, proper documentation and scoring, producing high quality recordings, and practicing patient care and safety. Must be taken Pass/Fail.
Prerequisites:  PSOM 1550
Co-requisites:  PSOM 2000, PSOM 2015, PSOM 2020, and PSOM 2025

Internship 1 Seminar (PSOM 2015)

Description:  This seminar meets concurrently with Internship 1 and extends and validates the learning you gain at an accredited sleep laboratory. You will discuss and reflect on internship experiences, report case studies, and assess your progress by participating in group discussions. Must be taken Pass/Fail.

Internship 2 (PSOM 2020)

Total Credits:  4   Internship/Practicum Credits:  4
Description:  In this course, you will continue practicing the skills developed in Internship 1, in a clinical sleep lab setting. These include, preparing patients for and initiating routine polysomnographic testing, working with patients throughout the night, documentation and scoring of the sleep study, and applying therapeutic interventions as ordered by a physician. You will continue to practice patient care and safety and educate patients. Emphasis in this course will be on accurate and timely scoring and reporting of PSG data, titrating PAP and oxygen therapy, and the development of problem solving and critical thinking skills in the sleep laboratory. You will also spend time measuring daytime sleepiness and performing other daytime skills. Must be taken Pass/Fail.
