Internship 1 (PSOM 2010)

Total Credits: 4
Internship/Practicum Credits: 4

Description: In this course, you will prepare patients for and initiate routine polysomnographic testing, produce high quality sleep study recordings, and work with patients throughout the night in the clinical sleep lab setting. You will learn to accurately score and document sleep studies, and apply therapeutic interventions as ordered by a physician. Emphasis will be on performing accurate and timely setups, proper documentation and scoring, producing high quality recordings, and practicing patient care and safety. Must be taken Pass/Fail.

Topical Outline:
1. Selection of equipment, supplies, and amplifier parameters with attention to the referring diagnoses, patient history/characteristics, PSG protocols and physician orders.
2. Accurate and timely application of electrodes and ancillary recording equipment on patients of all ages using effective infection control and safety precautions.
3. Initiation of sleep studies, including equipment and physiologic calibrations and other Lights Out procedures.
4. Identification and correction of artifacts throughout the study in order to ensure the integrity and quality of the sleep recording.
5. Documentation of sleep study events and other relevant information within the sleep recording.
6. Sleep study scoring and determining the need for therapeutic interventions.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Select equipment, supplies, and amplifier parameters with attention to the referring diagnoses, patient history/characteristics (i.e. age, cognitive ability, emotional/physical needs, level of cooperation, disease processes and risk of infection), PSG protocols, and physician orders.
2. Apply electrodes and ancillary recording equipment on patients of all ages, accurately and in a timely manner, while using effective infection control and safety precautions.
3. Initiate sleep studies by performing equipment and physiologic calibrations and other Lights Out procedures.
4. Perform troubleshooting and artifact correcting techniques, and proper amplifier setting selections, to ensure the integrity and quality of the sleep recording.
5. Document sleep study events in an accurate and timely way, including Lights Out, Lights On, time out of bed, body positions, therapeutic interventions, heart rate/ pattern, respiratory rate/pattern, SpO2 values, patient behaviors, and equipment malfunctions.
6. Accurately score sleep studies (sleep stages, arousals, respiratory events, ECG events, movement events, EEG events, and other clinically significant information) and determine the need for therapeutic interventions in a timely manner.
