Sleep Lab Simulation (PSOM 1550)

Total Credits: 3
Lab Credits: 3

Description: This course prepares students for the internship experience by simulating sleep studies in the on-campus lab. You will prepare subjects for polysomnography by selecting and applying electrodes and other monitors, performing equipment and physiologic calibrations, and performing other Lights Out procedures. You will also practice scoring and documentation of sleep studies. Must be taken Pass/Fail.

Topical Outline:
1. Components of the medical record necessary to perform a sleep study, including physician orders, patient history and medications.
2. Assessment of patients' needs (physical, cognitive, emotional) and special precautions necessary, and orientation of patients to the sleep center.
3. Appropriate equipment and montage selection for a sleep study and calibration of this equipment.
4. Application of electrodes and other recording equipment using effective infection control and safety precautions.
5. Physiologic calibrations and other lights out procedures.
6. Sleep study scoring rules, apnea/hypopnea index (AHI) calculation, and proper documentation of a sleep study.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify the components of the medical record that are necessary to perform a sleep study, including physician orders, patient history and medications.
2. Assess the physical, cognitive and emotional needs of a patient, what special precautions may be needed, and orient the patient to the sleep center.
3. Select and calibrate the appropriate equipment needed for the sleep study, and select the appropriate montages needed.
4. Apply the appropriate electrodes and other recording equipment properly, while using effective infection control and safety precautions.
5. Perform physiologic calibrations and Lights Out procedures adequately.
6. Demonstrate understanding of sleep study scoring and documentation, including Apnea/Hypopnea Index (AHI) calculation.
