Introduction to Sleep and Rest (PSOM 1000)

Description: This course introduces you to the basic human need of sleep and rest. You will learn about the importance of sleep and rest for a healthy life, sleep cycles, the history of sleep and common sleep disorders. You will be introduced to the field of sleep science and its relevance to other health professions. This course is open to the public as a health elective and is also a required course in the Polysomnography Technology A.A.S. program.

Topical Outline:
1. Influence of sleep on health and behavior
2. Sleep-wake patterns, sleep stages and circadian rhythms across the lifespan
3. Principles of good sleep hygiene
4. Common sleep disorders and the consequences of sleep deprivation
5. Personal sleep and dream diaries
6. Socio-cultural influences on sleep and the history of sleep sciences

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042
