Internship 2 Seminar (PSOM 2025)

Description: This seminar meets concurrently with Internship 2 and extends and validates the learning you gain at a partnering accredited sleep laboratory. You will discuss and reflect on internship experiences, report case studies, and assess your progress by participating in group discussions. Must be taken Pass/Fail.

Topical Outline:
1. Proper equipment selection and application of electrodes/equipment on patients of all ages using effective infection control and safety precautions.
2. Proper initiation of sleep studies, documentation of sleep study events, scoring of sleep study data, and determination of the need for therapeutic interventions.
3. Troubleshooting and artifact correcting techniques, and proper amplifier setting selections, in order to ensure the integrity and quality of the sleep recording.
4. Initiation and titration of PAP, NIV, and oxygen therapy for sleep-related breathing disorders in response to polysomnographic findings and physician orders.
5. EKG interpretation and appropriate responses to potential emergency situations.
6. MSLTs, MWTs and other daytime skills.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Review and analyze proper equipment selection and application of electrodes/equipment on patients using effective infection control and safety precautions.
2. Summarize the steps of initiating a sleep study, documenting sleep study events, scoring sleep study data, and determining the need for therapeutic interventions.
3. Recite the proper troubleshooting and artifact correcting techniques and proper amplifier setting selections that are needed to ensure the integrity and quality of sleep recordings.
4. Relate and discuss protocols for initiating and titrating PAP, NIV, and oxygen therapy for sleep-related breathing disorders in response to polysomnographic findings and physician orders.
5. Discuss EKG interpretation and the appropriate responses for potential emergency situations.
6. Reflect on daytime responsibilities and skills including measuring daytime sleepiness and sleep therapy management.
