Introduction to Photography (ARTS 1105)

Description:  This course introduces digital and analogue methods of producing photographs as art objects. You will practice the conceptual, technical, and historical aspects of photography within a Fine Arts context. You will learn how to utilize the film and digital files created to produce analog and digital photographs that work to answer artistic prompts, solve creative problems, and explore the personal insights gained through the experience of producing your own photographic work. You will also learn about the creative process through hands-on experience in the use of both film and digital cameras, black/white darkroom processes, film scanning and digital output will also be covered. You will explore through artist interviews, gallery visits and personal research on how contemporary artists use the camera or lens-based production methods to create fine art photography.

Introduction to Art (ARTS 1110)

Ceramics 1 (ARTS 1125)

Description:  This course investigates three-dimensional form using clay as the primary medium. You will learn basic wheel throwing and hand building techniques to create both functional and sculptural projects. You will gain a foundational understanding of the materials and processes used in ceramics. You will use a variety of clay bodies and glazes and you will learn how to express the visual elements and principles of three-dimensional art through the artistic work you make. Students will be introduced to historical and contemporary ceramic art through lectures and discussions. Through class critiques you will learn to analyze your own work and the work of others.

Printmaking (ARTS 1132)

Description:  This course will focus on three primary ways of making prints: monoprinting, relief printing and intaglio. While making prints with these methods in both traditional and experimental ways, you will arrive at a style that is uniquely your own. Description:  This course investigates sculptural form using a variety of materials and techniques. You will learn basic sculpting skills including additive and subtractive methods of working and basic three-dimensional construction. You will be exposed to historical and contemporary sculpture, and you will learn how to analyze and contextualize your own work and other student work through class critiques.

A.F.A. Portfolio (ARTS 2214)

Total Credits:  3   Lecture Credits:  1   Lab Credits:  2  
Description:  This course provides the fundamental skills you need for professional development and to present your artwork. You will select a body of work which has visual or thematic continuity and that represents a culmination of your AFA studies. You will meet with a panel of artists to present your plan and seek feedback. You will organize and install an exhibition, write an artist statement and resume to accompany the exhibit and create a digital portfolio of your artwork, in the form of a website.
Prerequisites:  ARTS 1111, ARTS 1114, ARTS 1121, ARTS 1141, ARTS 1145, ARTS 1150, and Instructor Permission. Prior to registration, please contact the instructor of the course. Students must have also completed or be concurrently enrolled in the 12 credits of elective ARTS courses before taking the Portfolio class. This includes a minimum of one 2D course and one 3D course.

Description:  This course is designed to develop ability in drawing through observation and interpretation of the human form. This will be achieved though exercises in gesture, contour, and tonal modeling while drawing from live figure models and studying anatomy. Description:  This course is an investigation of three-dimensional spatial problems through basic welding techniques. You will be introduced to the use of the formal qualities of the elements and principles used in the expression of ideas. Engaging critical thinking you will articulate individual responses to the conditions of universal existence. You will research both historical and contemporary metal art through electronic imagery, local galleries and museums. You will learn how to set up an economical studio, purchase stock and maintain equipment.
