Introduction to Photography (ARTS 1105)

Description: This course introduces digital and analogue methods of producing photographs as art objects. You will practice the conceptual, technical, and historical aspects of photography within a Fine Arts context. You will learn how to utilize the film and digital files created to produce analog and digital photographs that work to answer artistic prompts, solve creative problems, and explore the personal insights gained through the experience of producing your own photographic work. You will also learn about the creative process through hands-on experience in the use of both film and digital cameras, black/white darkroom processes, film scanning and digital output will also be covered. You will explore through artist interviews, gallery visits and personal research on how contemporary artists use the camera or lens-based production methods to create fine art photography.

Topical Outline:
1. Use of the 35mm film camera, and the digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera
2. Use of the black-and-white darkroom, film scanning, and digital output
3. Introduction/overview of the historical scope of photography as an art medium
4. Produce photographs that demonstrate both an awareness of photography as an art form, and the technical aspect of the medium.
5. Introduction to the critique process and use of Elements and Principles of Design in critique
6. Develop personal expression through the medium of photography

Learning Outcomes:
1. Develop a basic knowledge of the major genres and stylistic movements within the history of photography as personal expressions within a social context
2. Critically respond to photographic works of art by developing a comprehension of the basic vocabulary associated with art and design elements, and develop the strategies to better critique contemporary photographic work, and apply that to the student’s own work and that of their peers.
3. Demonstrate basic technical knowledge of camera operation and how the specific camera functions can be utilized in the process of expressing creative personal vision. Apply the Elements and Principles of Design as you respond critically to photographic works of art
4. Utilize the film and digital files created to produce analog and digital photographs that work to answer artistic prompts, solve creative problems and explore the personal insights gained through the experience of producing your own photographic work.
5. Explore through artist interviews, gallery visits and personal research how contemporary artists use the camera or lens-based production methods to create fine art photography
6. Evaluate and interpret the various production methods and display strategies associated with artist photographic projects in exhibition and book formats
