Description: This course investigates three-dimensional form using clay as the primary medium. You will learn basic wheel throwing and hand building techniques to create both functional and sculptural projects. You will gain a foundational understanding of the materials and processes used in ceramics. You will use a variety of clay bodies and glazes and you will learn how to express the visual elements and principles of three-dimensional art through the artistic work you make. Students will be introduced to historical and contemporary ceramic art through lectures and discussions. Through class critiques you will learn to analyze your own work and the work of others.

Topical Outline:
1. Introduction to basic clay forming skills, including throwing and hand building
2. Introduction to basic formal elements and principles as they are expressed through clay
3. Critical analysis of art works as expressions within an historical or social context through the critique process
4. Survey of basic contemporary and historical ceramic art

Learning Outcomes:
1. Articulate the formal qualities of the three dimensional elements and principles of art in hands-on studio projects
2. Demonstrate technical skills in hand building and wheel throwing through hands on projects
3. Critically examine art works as expressions of individual or human values within a cultural context through the critique process
4. Contextualize historical and contemporary ceramics
