Description:
This course covers concepts relating to principles of design and elements of art as they apply to two-dimensional artwork. You will work with a variety of materials and techniques to build an understanding of the foundation of two-dimensional expression. Experimentation, brainstorming and creative problem solving are emphasized. You will spend six to eight hours a week outside of class doing studio work.
Topical Outline:
1. Introduction to the definition of design as it relates to a visual arts practice
2. Elements of art: line, shape, color and space
3. Principles of design: unity, emphasis, balance, scale and rhythm
4. Exposure to a variety of two-dimensional media
Learning Outcomes:
1. Apply formal elements of art and principles of design including theories of color, spatial relationships, and perception to works of arts.
2. Develop skills in manipulating two dimensional materials and explore a variety of methods and effects, including multiple art media, while practicing safety measures appropriate to the material.
3. Explain and evaluate the effectiveness of personal artwork and the work of others through critique.
4. Produce a series of art works to illustrate exposure to and competency in two-dimensional art making.
5. Demonstrate an awareness of the importance of design in all two-dimensional artworks.
6. Demonstrate an increased appreciation of the vital role and value the fine arts and humanities have on the development of culture.
Prerequisites:
Students are responsible for purchasing some materials. Please contact faculty for approximate cost of materials and supplies.
