Description:
This course is designed to develop ability in drawing through observation and interpretation of the human form. This will be achieved though exercises in gesture, contour, and tonal modeling while drawing from live figure models and studying anatomy. You will explore contemporary viewpoints and modern aspects of life drawing through slide lectures and class discussions. You will also gain valuable problem-solving skills, work with and through failure, and develop confidence in improvisation and experimentation.
Topical Outline:
1. The study of human anatomy and physiology as it applies to drawing
2. Observational drawing and study from live subjects
3. Lectures, lessons and field trips focusing on the variety of historic applications of life drawing in art
4. Traditional techniques and materials used to render the figure (for example, gesture technique and vine charcoal or contour line drawing and ink) as well as contemporary approaches to drawing from life
5. Professional practices to include digital documentation methods of presenting artwork to the public for critique and exhibition
Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand and be able to depict basic proportional relationships when drawing from a live model.
2. Evaluate your own and fellow students work by applying the formal elements and principles in critique.
3. Demonstrate the ability to use various drawing materials (media) and techniques to create linear and tonal drawings of the figure.
4. Select and apply a variety of media to create life drawings with regard to desired outcome.
5. Combine your knowledge of figure drawing with your own personal style.
6. Explain contemporary and historical styles and techniques in life drawing.
