Description:
This course will focus on three primary ways of making prints: monoprinting, relief printing and intaglio. While making prints with these methods in both traditional and experimental ways, you will arrive at a style that is uniquely your own. You will also learn about the history of printmaking to understand the uniqueness of prints in the context of other media.
Topical Outline:
1. The history of printmaking, western and international
2. Print equipment and tools, focusing on good technique, maintenance and safe use
3. Monoprinting, traditional and non-traditional
4. Relief printing, such as linoleum, wood, collage or reduction methods
5. Intaglio, including drypoint, etching and aquatint
Learning Outcomes:
1. Recognize and characterize various print methods.
2. Demonstrate safe use of print materials, tools and equipment.
3. Create work that begins to demonstrate a personal style and proper technique.
4. Engage in the critique process when evaluating your work and the work of other artists.
5. Demonstrate an emerging knowledge of the historical and contemporary context of printmaking.
