Description: This course investigates sculptural form using a variety of materials and techniques. You will learn basic sculpting skills including additive and subtractive methods of working and basic three-dimensional construction. You will use a mix of materials that may include wood, plaster, clay and found objects among others. You will learn how to express the basic visual elements and principles of three-dimensional art through the work you make. You will be exposed to historical and contemporary sculpture, and you will learn how to analyze and contextualize your own work and other student work through class critiques.

Topical Outline:
1. Introduction to three dimensional building techniques and processes that will include both additive and subtractive methods
2. Elements and principles of art and design
3. Critical analysis of art works as expressions within an historical or social context
4. Historical and contemporary sculpture
5. A variety of 3-D materials that may include wood, plaster clay, and found objects, among others

Learning Outcomes:
1. Incorporate both additive and subtractive building techniques to class projects
2. Utilize the 3D elements and principles of art through sculptural works.
3. Critically examine art works as expressions of individual or human values within a cultural context through the critique process
4. Contextualize contemporary and historical sculpture
5. Explore the working properties of a variety of sculptural materials that may include wood, plaster, clay, found objects and others.
