Description: This course refines and expands on the concepts students practiced in Ceramics 1. Using three dimensional problem-solving you will explore the functional and narrative qualities of ceramics. Firing and glazing techniques will be demonstrated and practiced that will increase the skills you gained in ceramics 1. You will be introduced to historical and contemporary ceramic art through slide lectures discussions. Through class critiques you will learn to analyze your own work and the work of others. You will gain insight into professional practices and begin to develop a personal style.

Topical Outline:
1. Expansion of wheel throwing and hand building techniques
2. Continued exploration of 3D elements and principles of art and design through hands on work
3. Develop new tools for critical analysis of art in critique
4. Materials analysis
5. Contemporary and historical ceramic art

Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify and utilize the formal elements and principles used to express visual ideas
2. Critically evaluate art works as expressions of individual or human values within a cultural context
3. Demonstrate increased technical skills in hand building and wheel throwing
4. Formulate, mix, and apply a glaze
5. Contextualize historical and contemporary ceramics
