Description:
This course refines and expands on the concepts students practiced in Painting 1. You will further explore and apply the elements and principles of design as you analyze your work and the work of others. You will develop a personal style so that you may interpret your world in an individual way. You will also learn about well-known painters and paintings and use community galleries and museums as a source for your study. Students are responsible for purchasing some materials. Please contact faculty for approximate cost of materials and supplies.
Topical Outline:
1. Examination of a diverse group of historical and contemporary painting techniques, to further personal expression
2. Explore a wide range of drawings by engaging with other artists, museums and galleries
3. Art Elements and painting Principles and how to use them to critique work
4. Develop personal expression and aesthetic in painting
5. Connections between the painted image created and the content or meaning behind those images
6. Professional practice to include methods of preparing work for the exhibition, such as digital documentation, matting and framing, and exploring presentation formats
Learning Outcomes:
1. Expand on painting methods with a variety of subject matter and media at an intermediate level
2. Analyze paintings using terms including the art Elements and Principles at an intermediate level
3. Observe and understand painting as it relates to the museum and gallery system(s) both historically and in contemporary contexts
4. Originate critical responses to one’s own and other’s artwork
5. Demonstrate professional studio skills such as painting technique and color theory in your own studio practice
6. Develop a body of work that demonstrates your personal style, write an artist’s statement, and demonstrate professional studio skills for presenting artwork to the public
