Description:  This course covers the history, structure and principles of typography, as well as special considerations of designing with type. You will work with the traditional elements of typography: form, spacing, layout, color, mixing fonts and the integration of type with images.

Layout and Design (GRPH 1120)

Description:  This course serves as a foundation to design by exploring basic design theory, vocabulary, principles, practices and creative problem-solving. You will learn design fundamentals both traditional and digital media, images, and relationship between typography and other visual elements while developing layouts for the new media environment.
Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052. It is strongly recommended that students either place into MATH 0070 or successfully complete MATH 0060.

Introduction to Graphics Software (GRPH 1130)

Description:  This course introduces the basics of graphic design while utilizing industry standard software. You will design using a Mac computer while working within a prescribed set of design specifications using type, image, and graphics. You will create graphic design projects that reflect the creative industry on a basic level.
Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052. It is recommended that students can type 25 words per minute.

Color Theory (GRPH 1140)

Description:  Using lecture, demonstration and studio work, this course introduces color theory, its application, and reproduction. You will learn about the psychophysical, cultural, and perceptional parameters of color, and you will explore the theory and history of a variety of color systems. You will develop the ability to use and manage color effectively in creative applications by studying correct scientific and artistic theories related to color, organization, perception, reproduction and interaction.

Description:  This course explores graphic design through the ages, identifying important design elements, movements, innovators and applications. You will learn about the impact of graphic design on life and culture from posters to publishing to packaging from the industrial to the digital revolution. You will be able to identify the impact of graphic design through the use of posters, publishing and packaging.

Print Production (GRPH 1560)

Description:  This course covers the basic materials, methods, and mechanical processes necessary to the production of print-ready publications and other print media. You will learn the language of print production, be introduced to the studio skills/equipment, work with a computer/laser printer/scanner, and produce one/two-color projects. You will learn the fundamentals of paper specifying, print buying, proofing and meeting and managing production deadlines.

Description:  This course is an introduction to Adobe InDesign software, the industry standard for designing professional single- and multiple-page documents for print, and other electronic delivery systems. You will learn the fundamentals of style sheets, global and local page management, importing and formatting document assets, advanced typographic controls, color management, preflight and output options as applied to practical projects for commercial and digital printing and electronic publishing.

Description:  The graphic and web design internship is an opportunity for you to obtain supervised work experience that provides an important learning practical knowledge, as well as a useful link to the job market. You will obtain an internship site that supports your special area of interest and provides opportunities to interact with design professionals in a creative working environment. The internship requires 120 hours of residency at a design studio, advertising agency or related organization approved by the internship coordinator.

Description:  This course prepares you for a smooth transition into the design industry, covering such topics as identifying markets, customizing interview portfolios, networking, writing professional correspondence, creating résumés and interviewing. You will learn about industry standards practices and ethical guidelines, and you will design and produce individualized professional-identity systems, Web sites, and marketing materials. You will learn the necessary tools and skills to be in charge of a job search and lifelong planning. You will gain job-seeking skills through personal workbooks, informational interviews, readings, discussions, presentations and lectures. This course will give you an opportunity to prepare professional materials and skills in a supportive, cooperative and enthusiastic learning environment.

Description:  This course introduces small business practices required for operating a successful freelance business. You will learn the topics which can be utilized to build a freelance business in graphic design, web design, photography, apparel design, freelance writing, videography, or any other creative endeavor. You will develop an informal business plan essential to any startup business. Topics include: sales strategies, practical business concepts, personal finances, business communications, taxes, insurance, and issues of copyright. You will research relevant social media and social networking and analyze it as a part of an overall marketing and self-promotion strategy.
