Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician Internship (CSIP 1002)

Description: The 80-hour internship course prepares you for employment and to be become eligible for Sterile Processing and Distribution certification. Through this practicum experience, you will become familiar with all aspects related to the sterile processing and distribution services of a hospital. The focus of this course is to provide you with comprehensive skills to be able to perform competently and safely. You will have hands-on practice sessions to develop the skills and techniques required in performing various activities in the sterile processing and distribution areas. This course must be completed within one term of CSIP 1000. Upon successful completion of CSIP 1000 and CSIP 1002, students are eligible to take the certification exam from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc. (CBSPD).

Topical Outline:
1. Basic surgical instruments
2. Safe processing of decontamination and sterile wrapping in the lab and clinical setting
3. Case cart picking in the lab and clinical setting
4. Biological data used by the sterile processing technician

Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of basic surgical instruments in a clinical setting
2. Demonstrate an understanding of safe processes of decontamination in the lab and clinical setting
3. Demonstrate safe and accurate processes of sterile wrapping
4. Demonstrate the process of sterilization
5. Demonstrate an understanding the function of being a case cart picker
6. Understand, organize and interpret biological data as it relates to the role of the sterile processing technician

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042
Co-requisites:  HCCC 1010, HCCC 1020, HCCC 1030, HCCC 1040, HCCC 1050, HCCC 1060, HCCC 1070, and HCCC 1100
