Role of the Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSIP 1000)

Description: This course is designed for students interested in a health-related career. It prepares you to perform the role of Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician in such positions as Instrument Tech and Case Cart Tech. You will learn foundational Anatomy and Physiology and basic principles of Microbiology. Course competencies include decontamination, preparation and packaging for sterilization, sterilization process, and sterile storage. Basic surgical instrumentation and medical terminology that is necessary for this area of employment in the healthcare setting will also be presented. The lab will include campus and hospital-based practice settings.

Topical Outline:
1. Anatomy and Physiology as it relates to sterile instrument processing
2. Medical terminology as it relates to sterile instrument processing
3. Microbiology as it relates to sterile instrument processing
4. Infection control, disinfection and sterilization, and instrument storage
5. Role of the sterile instrument technician in a health care setting

Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and microbiology needed by a sterile instrument technician
2. Identify basic surgical instruments
3. Understand preparation and packing required for instrument sterilization
4. Demonstrate an understanding of decontamination of sterile processing
5. Understand the process of sterilization and concept of sterile storage in the health care setting
6. Understand distribution and the role and responsibilities of the sterile processing technician in a health care setting

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042
Co-requisites:  HCCC 1010, HCCC 1020, HCCC 1030, HCCC 1040, HCCC 1050, HCCC 1060, HCCC 1070, and HCCC 1100
