Description:
This course focuses on the recognition and understanding of medical terms after students learn the meaning of word parts. A systems approach based on human anatomy is used. You will also learn to interpret and implement common medical abbreviations and symbols by utilizing healthcare forms and medical records. Correct pronunciation and spelling of terminology is emphasized. Central Services majors must take this course A-F.
Topical Outline:
1. Introduction to medical and anatomical terminology
2. Basic medical terms as related to 11 body systems
3. Directions and regions of the body
4. Pathogenic organisms, immunology and medical specialties
5. Mental health and special senses of sight and hearing
Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate a broad understanding of the meaning and construction of health care terms
2. Develop critical thinking and related skills necessary for the understanding and effective application of health care terminology
3. Understand facts, concepts, and a technical vocabulary that are critical to understanding both normal and disease processes
4. Demonstrate proper pronunciation of medical terms
Prerequisites:
Placement into
READ 0200 or
ESOL 0052 or completion of
READ 0100 or
ESOL 0042. Central Services majors must take this course A-F.
