Description:  This class uses an interdisciplinary approach to examine some of the themes, questions and findings of Women's Studies scholarship. You will use readings, films, and class discussion to explore social, psychological, biological, and cultural aspects of women's experiences, ranging from the personal to the public. You will consider cultural notions of women and examine how women's lives have been shaped by gender identities and gender inequality. Finally, focusing on women as a force in social change, you will explore the profound ways in which the personal is political.

Description:  This course explores experiences of and theories about lesbians from various cultures in the United States between the late 19th century and the present. You will explore a variety of texts and other media sources to learn about the history, meanings, and representations of relationships between women and to gain a better understanding of lesbian identities and perspectives.

Gender and Culture (WOST 1140)

Description:  This course looks at the relationship between women's and men's bodies and culturally constructed gender roles. You will examine gender differences and cultural expectations in the United States among people of various ethnicities, social classes, and sexualities. You will consider the interrelationship between social concepts of the feminine and the masculine and learn how gender ideologies have impacted the arts and humanities and other aspects of society.

The Female Divine (WOST 2200)

Description:  This course presents the ancient roots of our current cultural views of modern women. Drawing upon goddess traditions from around the world, as well as mythology, literature, and art, you will explore archetypal feminine symbolism in the context of matriarchal and patriarchal value systems. You will explore the symbolic and cultural significance of female divinity and the impact of its loss on all aspects of society, and examine women's roles in contemporary religion and spirituality.

Women's Response to Violence (WOST 2211)

Description:  This course uses women's creative expressions and experiences to examine the movement from powerlessness to power, both on individual and societal levels. You will learn about a variety of empowerment experiences, from personal narrative to women's movements from around the world, all focused on ways that women find activism, engagement, and strength. You will consider the feminist movement in general and other activism organized by women. You will explore ways that women find their voices, tell their own stories, take control of their lives and gain a sense of their own power.

Women's Human Rights (WOST 2250)

Description:  This course presents a thematic examination of the human rights of girls and women around the world. You will think critically about women's personal, social, legal, political and economic rights, and compare the varying domestic and international settings that can alter the meaning and practicalities of these rights. In addition, you will study the work of organizations and individuals involved in combating women's human rights violations.
