Women and Empowerment (WOST 2213)

Description: This course uses women's creative expressions and experiences to examine the movement from powerlessness to power, both on individual and societal levels. You will learn about a variety of empowerment experiences, from personal narrative to women's movements from around the world, all focused on ways that women find activism, engagement, and strength. You will consider the feminist movement in general and other activism organized by women. You will explore ways that women find their voices, tell their own stories, take control of their lives and gain a sense of their own power.

1. 1. Understand the primary goals and issues addressed by the women’s movement
2. 2. Demonstrate an awareness of the obstacles and successes related to women’s empowerment
3. 3. Assess the process of empowerment and describe pertinent aspects of empowerment
4. 4. Examine goals and issues addressed by movements specific to women of ethnicity
5. 5. Analyze the role of women as mothers as the foundation of activism
6. 6. Explore the role of women as peacemakers in global and local anti-war and anti-violence movements

Prerequisites: 

ENGL 1110 or ENGA 1110.
