Description: This class uses an interdisciplinary approach to examine some of the themes, questions and findings of Women's Studies scholarship. You will use readings, films, and class discussion to explore social, psychological, biological, and cultural aspects of women's experiences, ranging from the personal to the public. You will consider cultural notions of women and examine how women's lives have been shaped by gender identities and gender inequality. Finally, focusing on women as a force in social change, you will explore the profound ways in which the personal is political.

1. 1. Understand the primary issues addressed by the women’s movement
2. 2. Demonstrate an awareness of the intersection of women’s lives with race, ability, class, sexuality, and age
3. 3. Understand the process of gender socialization and the means by which it takes place, along with the consequences for girls and women
4. 4. Assess the various ways in which culture and society define women and women’s roles, and the impact of social institutions on women’s experiences
5. 5. Identify solutions to some of the issues faced by women and express and understanding of the factors that create that same situation for women

Prerequisites: 

Placement score into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052.
