Assessment and Interviewing (COUN 2620)

Description: This course teaches the skills of conducting chemical health comprehensive assessments and assessment summaries for substance use disorders. You will learn appropriate interviewing techniques, data collection, clinical writing, and diagnostic and referral procedures. You will practice motivational interviewing in mock interviews. Must be taken A-F.

1. The role of an Alcohol & Drug Counselor
2. Comprehensive assessment practice sessions using motivational interviewing skills
3. American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) six dimensions, risk ratings and levels of care
4. Diagnostic criteria for Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders in the DSM-5 TR
5. Navigating Direct Access for Comprehensive Assessments
6. Clinical Writing Skills

Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate the process of conducting a Chemical Health Comprehensive Assessment
2. Apply learning diagnostic criteria for Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders in the DSM-5 TR
3. Practice motivational Interviewing skills during the Assessment process
4. Demonstrate the purpose and role of the ASAM six dimensions, risk ratings and appropriate levels of care
