Wellness Leadership (PHED 2210)

Description: This is a required course for students pursuing the Personal Trainer and/or Group Exercise certification. You will learn behavior modification techniques and strategies for instructing participants in various areas of wellness as well as promoting wellness, as a leader in your community. You will apply these principles to teach fitness classes, work with individuals one on one, or organize a community wellness project.

Topical Outline:
1. Fitness Psychology
2. Behavior Modification Techniques; i.e. goal setting, motivation, leadership skills
3. Fitness Instruction Methodology, Strategies and Program Design; i.e. proper sequencing, giving correction and feedback
4. Wellness promotion and advocacy
5. Professional and Legal Responsibilities and Business Practices
6. Teaching Practice

Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate proper goal setting
2. Demonstrate use of effective instructional, promotional and advocacy techniques and strategies
3. Apply knowledge learned in a fitness class, one-one setting or alternate project
4. Identify their mission statement as a wellness leader

Prerequisites:  PHED 1123 or PHED 1180 or Instructor Approval
