Introduction to Chemistry (CHEM 1020)

Description: This course is intended as a broad introduction to chemistry for the non-science major. Topics covered include the scientific method, atomic structure, the periodic table, bonding, acids and bases, nomenclature, equations, stoichiometry, gas laws, and oxidation and reduction. The lecture/theory portion of this course is offered both on campus in the classroom and as a Web course. This course includes two hours of required lab per week, which must be taken on campus. The laboratory introduces students to safe handling of chemicals, appropriate use of lab ware, and transcription of observations and data. Concurrent registration in lab is required, and attendance in the first week lab safety session is mandatory.

2. Chemical bonding, molecular geometry, and nomenclature
3. Chemical reactions and stoichiometry
4. Measurement and problem-solving strategies
5. Solutions and concentration
6. Laboratory methods, measurements, and safety protocols

Learning Outcomes:
1. Describe the properties of atoms, ions, and compounds using atomic structure, the periodic table, nomenclature, and bonding
2. Determine the name, Lewis structure, and molecular geometry of a compound
3. Balance chemical equations and use them to predict limiting reactants and theoretical yields
4. Solve problems using equations, conversion factors, significant figures, and scientific notation
5. Identify solution properties, reactions, and concentrations
6. Demonstrate safe lab procedure while observing reactions and recording experimental data

Prerequisites:  Placement into MATH 0080 or completion of MATH 0070 or MATH 0075 or MATH 0077 or MATH 0990. It is strongly recommended to have also placed into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200.
