Beginning Algebra with ALEKS (MATH 0077)

Total Credits: 5
Lecture Credits: 5

Description: This course provides an alternate, self-directed way to learn beginning algebra concepts using ALEKS, a Web-based math assessment and learning system. First, ALEKS will determine your individual study plan and the number of credits for which you need to register. In the classroom, you will use ALEKS at your own pace with the help of an instructor. In the course, you will demonstrate mastery of these concepts: arithmetic readiness, geometry and data analysis, real numbers and variables, algebraic expressions, linear equations and inequalities, literal equations, functions, graphing linear equations in two variables, integer exponents, polynomial arithmetic and factoring, rational expressions and proportions, radicals and rational exponents, and quadratic equations. NOTE: For programs having a mathematics requirement of completion of MATH 0060 only, students should take MATH 0060 instead of MATH 0077.

Topical Outline:
1. Arithmetic Readiness
2. Real Numbers and Algebraic Expressions
3. Linear Equations, Inequalities, Lines and Functions
4. Exponents, Polynomials and Factoring
5. Rational Expressions
6. Radicals and Quadratic Equations

Learning Outcomes:
1. Work with signed numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages
2. Evaluate algebraic expressions
3. Solve linear and quadratic equations; solve linear inequalities
4. Apply properties of exponents, factor polynomials
5. Graph linear and quadratic functions
6. Develop problem-solving skills via exploration of applications involving the use of linear equations, quadratic equations, and linear inequalities

Prerequisites:  Placement into MATH 0077 or MATH 0060. Instructor Permission Required
