Description:
This course is designed to provide you with further technical, historical and critical support in the making of photographs. It focuses on black-and-white photography, presented as single images within a body of work. Through slides, videos and discussions, you will consider historical concerns in photography as precedents for contemporary photographic practices.
Topical Outline:
1. Introduction to advanced chemical techniques and fiber-based printing
2. Introduction to medium and large format cameras, and presentation concerns (matting, framing, etc.)
3. In-depth, focused assignments respond to photo historical and contemporary practices
4. An emphasis on the multiple vs. the discreet image, group sequencing and the role of presentation
5. A strong emphasis on the critique process (group, one on one, and work-in-progress)
6. An emphasis on long-term, conceptually based projects that foster creative expression through the medium of photography
Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate expanded knowledge and implementation of chemical and material options in the darkroom
2. Demonstrate expanded knowledge of camera technologies, and a greater awareness of the role of photographic presentation
3. Articulate a deeper understanding of historical and contemporary practices in photography
4. Recognize visual preconceptions and make clear, concise, coherent statements about the world in which they live
5. Articulate a deeper understanding, through critique-intensive processes, the technical and conceptual components of their artwork
