Description:
This course introduces the student to the conceptual, technical, historical aspects of photography within a Fine Arts context. You will learn the creative process through hands-on experience in the use of both film and digital cameras, black/white darkroom processes, film scanning and digital output.
Topical Outline:
1. Introduction to the use of the 35mm film camera, and the digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera
2. Introduction to the use of the black-and-white darkroom, film scanning, and digital output
3. Introduction/overview of the historical scope of the medium of photography
4. Students produce photographs within the confines of assignments intended to provide both an awareness of how photography has developed as an art and communications medium, and the technical aspect of the medium relating to that development
5. Introduction to the critique process
6. Develop personal expression through the medium of photography
Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the major genres and stylistic movements within the history of photography as personal expressions within a social context
2. Demonstrate a basic technical proficiency through the production of both silver and digital photographs
3. Demonstrate basic conceptual skills to create and critically respond to photographic works of art
4. Demonstrate a basic technical knowledge of camera operation and darkroom practices
