Internship 2 Seminar (PSOM 2160)

Description: This seminar meets in conjunction with Internship 2. Its purpose is to extend and validate the learning you gain at a partnering accredited sleep laboratory. You will discuss and reflect on your internship experiences, report case studies, assess your progress, and participate in group discussions. Must be taken Pass/Fail.

Topical Outline:

Learning Outcomes:
1. 1. Discuss the selection of equipment, supplies, and amplifier parameters and with attention to the referring diagnoses, patient characteristics, PSG protocols and physician orders
2. 2. Reflect on documenting sleep study events in an accurate and timely way, including lights out, lights on, time out of bed, body positions, therapeutic interventions, heart rate/pattern, respiratory rate/pattern, SpO2 values, patient behaviors, malfunctions and manipulations of amplifier settings and montage derivations
3. 3. Discuss determining the need for therapeutic interventions
4. 4. Reflect on Identifying and correcting artifacts to ensure the integrity and quality of the sleep recording
5. 5. Discuss assessing individual patient care needs with regard to age, cognitive ability, emotional needs, level of cooperation, disease processes, and risk of infection

Prerequisites: 

PSOM 1650, PSOM 1660.


Co-requisites: 

PSOM 2000 and PSOM 2150.
