Internship 2 (PSOM 2150)

Description: In this course you will prepare the patient for Polysomnographic monitoring and therapeutic interventions in the clinical sleep laboratory setting and work with the patient throughout the night, applying therapeutic treatments as ordered by a physician. You will practice patient care and safety, and you will prepare and initiate routine polysomnographic testing. You will conduct therapeutic interventions in patients of all ages, and educate patients. Must be taken Pass/Fail.

Learning Outcomes:
1. 1. Select equipment, supplies, and amplifier parameters and with attention to the referring diagnoses, patient characteristics, PSG protocols and physician orders
2. 2. Document sleep study events in an accurate and timely way, including lights out, lights on, time out of bed, body positions, therapeutic interventions, heart rate/pattern, respiratory rate/pattern, SpO2 values, patient behaviors, equipment malfunctions
3. 3. Determine the need for therapeutic interventions
4. 4. Identify and correct artifacts to ensure the integrity and quality of the sleep recording
5. 5. Assess individual patient care needs with regard to age, cognitive ability, emotional needs, level of cooperation, disease processes, and risk of infection

PSOM 1650, PSOM 1660.


Co-requisites: 

PSOM 2000 and PSOM 2160.
