Description:
This course is designed to acquaint you with the physiological, psychological and sociological aspects of commonly abused drugs in the community. Topics include: drugs of abuse (marijuana, alcohol, cocaine, etc.); substance abuse among people in the community (youth, ethnic and cultural groups); and substance abuse services (prevention, treatment and drugs and law enforcement). This is a nonprogram course that is offered for the general student body.

Introduction to Addictionology (COUN 2510)

Description:
This course acquaints you with what addiction counselors experience both personally and professionally. Ethics, licensure and the 12 core functions of a counselor are discussed. The course focuses on gaining a working knowledge of predominant professional approaches to addiction. Historic approaches, Jellinek theory and the disease concept are critically reviewed. It also examines similarities of many types of harmful dependencies and stresses differences and parallels among various approaches to their treatment. Discussion and writing assignments allow you to further develop critical thinking skills. Must be taken A-F.

Psychopharmacology (COUN 2520)

Description:
This course will acquaint you with psychoactive drug classifications and with the physiological, biochemical, and psychological effects of mind-altering drugs. This course describes the characteristics of several types of mental illness, how they co-vary with chemical dependency and how education and counseling techniques are used in treatment. Multicultural Counseling Skills (COUN 2540)

Description:
In this course, you will develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that alcohol- and drug-abuse counselors need in order to work effectively with culturally diverse client populations. You will focus on psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral theories and techniques, as well as on motivational interviewing and family counseling within a multicultural context. Description:
This course teaches the skills of chemical health assessment and referral. You will learn appropriate interviewing techniques, data collection, and diagnostic and referral procedures. You will review several assessment tools, including "Rule 25" and DSM-IV criteria. You will practice advanced counseling skills and motivational interviewing techniques. This course meets the 30-hour state requirement for "Rule 25" training. Must be taken A-F.

Description:
This course provides the knowledge and skills necessary for successful case management for professional addiction counseling. You will learn about the twelve core functions of addiction counseling: screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, case management, crisis intervention, client education, referral, reports and record keeping, and consultation with other professionals. You will also address the cultural, mental health and legal/ethical factors of clinical practice. Must be taken A-F.

Practicum Assessment and Preparation (COUN 2650)

Description:
In this course, faculty will evaluate your readiness for a practicum and guide you in selecting practicum sites for the next semester. You will examine your strengths and areas for improvement as a potential alcohol and drug-abuse counselor, develop goals and criteria for practicum site selection, and interview at a variety of possible treatment and program sites. At the end of this course you must choose and be accepted by an appropriate practicum site approved by program faculty. You must earn at least a "C" (2.0) grade in this course in order to be eligible for practicum the following semester. You must undergo a criminal background check through the Minnesota Department of Human Services. Must be taken A-F.

Description:
You will transfer the knowledge and skills acquired in coursework to the clinical setting in this first of two required practica. You will demonstrate competence in the Transdisciplinary Foundations of Practice Dimensions (12 core functions) of a counselor. The experience may take place in a variety of agencies. You will collaborate with faculty on internship planning with the intent of meeting your individualized career goals. The two practica must total 880 hours and one must be at least 440 hours. You will also attend biweekly two-hour group classroom sessions as part of practicum supervision. Must be taken Pass/Fail.

In this elective course, you will learn and apply skills and competencies for screening, assessing and counseling persons with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders described in SAMHSA TIP 42 "Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons with Co-Occurring Disorders."
