Camera Techniques (PHMO 1010)

Description: This course is an introduction to photographic and video capture process and digital workflow using digital SLR and/or mirrorless cameras. You will capture still and video image files as you learn how to navigate camera menus, calculate exposure, control white balance, depth of field, subject motion, focal length and use composition techniques for photo and video. You will develop a practical still and motion image vocabulary. You must provide your own DSLR or mirrorless camera with video capability for this course. Consult with instructor for camera recommendations.

Topical Outline:
1. Digital SLR / mirrorless camera operation
2. Controlling exposure with aperture, shutter and ISO
3. Controlling motion and depth of field in still and video capture
4. Still and video capture file formats
5. Processing still and video files for delivery

Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate technical proficiency with a digital SLR / mirrorless camera
2. Produce consistent color-balanced still and motion imagery
3. Demonstrate proficiency in depth of field and focal length selection
4. Demonstrate equivalent and bracketing exposure control
5. Choose appropriate camera support for still and motion imagery
6. Produce a package of related still and motion assets

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042. PHMO Instructor Approval for Non-PHMO Majors
