Physiology Laboratory (BIOL 2228)

Description: This course uses active, interactive, and cooperative learning to implement the steps of the scientific method to link external stimuli to physiological responses. You will work in cooperative teams to propose hypotheses, design and conduct experiments, communicate and analyze results, and provide feedback. You will connect your laboratory experiments to physiological reflex loops and levels of organization, interpret clinical results, and following disciplinary standards. This laboratory can be taken before, during, or after BIOL 2227: Physiology. To fulfill MnTC Goal Area 3, both BIOL 2227 and BIOL 2228 must be completed and may be required for certain programs, including nursing.

Topical Outline:
1. Academic honesty
2. Physiological reflex loops
3. Interpret clinical results (e.g., blood typing)
4. Scientific method
5. Propose hypotheses and design and perform experiments to measure the effects of changed stimuli on body system responses
6. Graph, summarize, analyze, and communicate experimental data

Learning Outcomes:
1. Implement the scientific method: propose hypotheses linking stimuli to body system responses; design experiments to test these hypotheses; conduct experiments; graph, summarize, analyze, and communicate experimental data; and write lab report discussions to connect experiments to the larger context and future experiments.
2. Connect laboratory experiments to physiological reflex loops and levels of organization (molecule, cell, tissue, organ, organ system)
3. Work effectively within a cooperative team to communicate and complete steps of the scientific process, provide peer feedback, and reflect on team skills.
4. Interpret laboratory test results
5. Adhere to disciplinary standards such as following directions and acting ethically
