Firewall Implementation and Management (ITEC 2890)

Description: This course provides the skills needed to install, configure, troubleshoot, and manage firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection systems, and other network defense products. You will practice firewall configuration, be able to respond to alerts, carry out troubleshooting, handle failures, and other management tasks. You will gain experience installing, managing and troubleshooting intrusion detection systems and virtual private networks. You will further build your skills in network administration and your understanding of security concepts such as cryptography. You are expected to have a working knowledge of network administration, and solid grasp of TCP/IP and fundamental security concepts. Must be taken A-F.

1. Firewalls
2. Intrusion Detection/Prevention Systems (IDS/IPS)
3. Virtual Private Networks (VPN)
4. Related security concepts (e.g. cryptography)
5. Network Defense

Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand firewall architecture, protection capabilities, and rule sets
2. Demonstrate appropriate rule set development and configuration
3. Implement and configure a firewall, intrusion detection systems, and/or network defense systems; monitor, analyze, and respond to data/alerts created by the system(s)
4. Implement a VPN
5. Understanding network administration and security concepts e.g. TCP/IP, cryptography, etc.
6. Demonstrate network and firewall troubleshooting techniques
