Description:
The Art of Directing introduces students to directing for the camera based on the production foundation created in the first two semesters. You will learn how to interpret scripts, work with actors, and direct cast and crew efforts towards a common objective - creating a work of unified vision and expression. Through scene studies, screenings, discussions, readings and collaborative exercises you will understand the director’s role and craft. Must be taken A - F.
Topical Outline:
1. The Director’s role
2. Screenplay, scene and character analysis: theme, dramatic beats, subtext, character arc, intentions and needs, subtext
3. Casting agents, casting call, auditions, callbacks, table read, rehearsals, location scouting, vision book/statement, camera tests, coverage blocking plan (overhead) storyboards, shot lists, shooting script
4. Performance: stage versus screen, actor’s vocabulary, action verbs, communication with actors, establishing trust, adjustments, improvisation, common problems
5. On-set protocol
6. Collaborations with cast and crew: shaping the story from conception to final mix
Learning Outcomes:
1. Analyze and breakdown screenplays to understand plot, character, tone, theme, beats, subtext and intentions
2. Design effective blocking strategies for camera placement and performance
3. Develop soft skills needed to persuade other skilled artists of varying temperaments and abilities to work together as a team toward a common creative goal
4. Select and cast effective performers appropriate to story and character
