Description:
This course is a practical examination of issues raised in
BIOL 1136 that are related to the human impact on Earth’s ecological systems; resource and energy use and pollution. It will introduce students to doing outdoor field investigations.
Completion of both
BIOL 1136 and
BIOL 1137 are required count as a MnTC Goal Area 3.
Topical Outline:
1. Examine topics raised in
BIOL 1136 (Environmental Science) in the laboratory
2. Become familiar with the Scientific Method
3. Get firsthand experience working with scientific equipment used in the environmental sciences
4. Collect and interpret scientific data, both in lab and in the outdoors
Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the Scientific Method, its principles, procedures, and applications to Environmental Science
2. Understand the basic principles of the Natural Sciences (in particular, Ecology)
3. Demonstrate knowledge of pollution issues related to resource use
4. Perform and evaluate outdoor field investigations
