Shielded Metal Arc Welding I (WELD 1101)

Description: This course introduces electrical arc welding with a flux coated electrode. You will be welding in the flat position with various types of electrodes. You will also learn arc welding safety and power sources.

Topical Outline:
1. Safety hazards associated with use of arc welding equipment
2. Power-sources, machine controls and equipment for Shielded Metal Arc Welding
3. SMAW theory and application
4. Welding applications with various electrodes in the flat position on various joint designs
5. Weld inspections and weld discontinuity identification

Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand safety hazards associated with arc welding
2. Understand the proper use of power sources, machine controls, equipment and electrode selection for Shielded Metal Arc Welding
3. Demonstrate proper welding technique with E-6013 electrode in the flat position on various joint designs

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042
