Description:
This course explores the poetic themes, forms, and styles of the major women poets of the world, including English and non-English writers in translation. You will also examine the relationship between language, creative expression and power as they are experienced by women poets around the world.
Topical Outline:
1. Methods for reading and interpreting poetry
2. Historical place of women poets in the major literary canons of world literature
3. Themes and issues such as home, relationships, work, war, family, as expressed in poetry by women on the five continents
4. Impact of gender, race, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation on women poets around the world and throughout history
5. Women poets as global social change agents
6. The voice of women poets in the arenas of social responsibility and power relations
Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of poetry as an art form via its patterns and structures
2. Analyze women poets’ formal innovations and their impact on the art of poetry
3. Respond critically to poetry by women from among the major literary traditions
