Description:
This introductory course helps you develop a better understanding of the major issues and conflicts that challenge our present global order. The course will cover the following main topics: the politics of intervention; cooperation and conflict in global institutions; south-north relations and the politics of hunger, development, foreign aid, and trade; politics of human rights and the environment; politics of the arms race; and case studies in the politics of international conflicts. The selection will depend on world events as they occur during the semester.

1. Theory and Practice - Perspectives on International Relations (Realism, Liberalism, Constructivism, and Alternative Perspectives)
2. Political Geography, Global Institutions and Alliances
3. Globalization and International Development
4. Politics of Arms Races, Global Conflict, War and Peacekeeping
5. Political Economy and the Politics of Trade, Debt and Aid
6. Global Challenges: Human Rights, Environment, and Poverty
Learning Outcomes:
1. Compare and contrast the major global issues and conflicts among states and peoples
2. Outline the political organization of the world, world maps, place name locations, and global alliances and institutions
3. Evaluate alternative views on the present state of the world and its political organizations, dynamics, and institutions and the interrelationships among political, economic, and cultural elements in understanding these views
4. Analyze the main issues in global conflicts and in South/North relations - development, world hunger, aid, trade, environment, human rights, and the arms race
5. Support examples of active citizenship committed to the creation of a sustainable, peaceful, and prosperous global future
