Strategies for College Success (FYST 1100)

Description: This course is designed to increase students' success in college by assisting them in obtaining skills necessary to reach their educational objectives. Topics include college requirements and expectations, academic and career goal-setting, time planning, stress management, communication skills, learning styles, and an overview of study skills.

Topical Outline:
1. Introduction to College Structure and Expectations
2. Navigating College Systems and Resources
3. Learning Approaches, Communication Skills and Critical Thinking
4. Goal Setting, Academic Planning and Career Pathways

Learning Outcomes:
1. Describe the components of a college structure including but not limited to the environment, code of conduct and registration process
2. Identify campus resources and demonstrate how to effectively utilize the resources, including, but not limited to career and academic planning and financial literacy
3. Compare and contrast the diverse needs and values of students at Minneapolis College and the larger community
4. Apply critical thinking to study skills, test taking strategies and time management techniques in the college journey
5. Identify the differences between college & high school learning environments

Prerequisites:  Placement into ENGL 0900 or ESOL 0051 or completion of ESOL 0041
