Description:
This course explores foundational communication concepts and fosters communication skills in interpersonal communication, group communication and public speaking. You will learn concepts, principles and skills designed to help you become a more effective communicator in a variety of contexts.
Topical Outline:
1. Foundational principles of communication
2. Communication skills in interpersonal relationships
3. Communicating and problem solving in groups
4. Presenting and organizing speeches including; speech preparation, delivery, informative and persuasive speaking
5. Additional topics may include; interviewing, mass communication, intercultural communication, gender communication, argumentation, oral interpretation, communication ethics, or other communication topics as assigned by the instructor
Learning Outcomes:
1. Apply foundational communication concepts and understand the role of communication in various contexts (interpersonal, group, public speaking)
2. Demonstrate public speaking skills necessary for the preparation and implementation of successful group and individual presentations
3. Understand key factors for effective communication and how communication behaviors contribute to positive or negative outcomes in different contexts
4. Apply problem solving and critical thinking skills to accomplish successful communication interactions
