Description:
This interdisciplinary course explores the experiences, both past and present, which have impacted Mexican Americans (Chicanas/os) living in the United States. You will gain an elementary understanding of the history, heritage, culture and sociopolitical issues affecting Chicanas/os and you will learn about Chicana/o cultural expression through an examination of literature, music, film and art. You will also learn to respond critically to relevant course materials and will explore in depth one topic of your choice.
Topical Outline:
1. Methodologies and guiding theoretical concepts of Chicana/o Studies
2. History of Chicana/os in the United States
3. The diverse cultural expressions of Chicana/os in the United States
4. Chicana/o Movements, including Civil Rights
5. Contemporary issues affecting Chicanas/os (for example, immigration, repatriation, worker's rights, language and education
Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand the complexity and diversity of Chicana/os in the United States
2. Demonstrate understanding of the contemporary issues facing Chicana/os in the United States
3. Know and can apply prevailing methodologies and guiding theoretical concepts in Chicano Studies
4. Apply course content to analysis of contemporary Chicano life
