Life Drawing (ARTS 2221)

Description: Life Drawing: A course devoted to understanding and use of life forms (primarily human) as a subject in fine art works. Lesson will incorporate a variety of art media and styles to render and interpret subjects. Many sessions of this course will use the human figure, both clothed and nude as a subject. Students will need to provide their own drawing materials for the course.

Topical Outline:
1. The study of human anatomy and physiology as it applies to drawing
2. Observational drawing and study from live subjects; this may include in-class models as well as museums, theatres, zoos, aviaries, etc.
3. Lectures, lessons and field trips focusing on the variety of historic applications of life drawing in art
4. Examination and experimentation with the diverse formal and expressive means of responding to live subjects
5. Various art media and how they apply to life drawing

Learning Outcomes:
1. Analyze the anatomical (skeletal and muscular) structure of the human form through drawing
2. Recognize and demonstrate competent use of formal elements and principles (eg: balance, value, proportion, etc.) in life drawings
3. Recognize, understand and use variety life drawing techniques such as contour, value and gesture
4. Select and apply a variety of media to create life drawings with regard to desired outcome
5. Evaluate contemporary and historical styles and techniques used by artists in life drawing
