Description:
Foundation Drawing 1 is an introduction to the basic drawing principles of line, perspective, composition and value. Demonstrations, slides and studio sessions teach you to respond critically to art, as well as to apply aesthetic principles to your own and others' drawings. You will spend six to eight hours a week outside of class doing studio work.
Topical Outline:
1. Introduction to traditions and relationships of image, form and content in drawing.
2. Elements and principles of design in drawings.
3. Traditional and nontraditional drawing materials and methods as expressive means in art.
4. Make drawings that reflect formal and/or technical decision making to achieve objective and/or subjective goals.
5. Concepts of drawing as a form of creative and cultural communication.
6. Health and safety best practices within the discipline.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of and practice in diverse drawing methods.
2. Recognize and apply the elements and principles of design (i.e. value, line, space, balance, emphasis, etc.) to one's own and other drawings
3. Choose and apply drawing materials (i.e. papers, wet and dry media) with consideration to the desired outcome
4. Critically evaluate the formal and contextual relationships in drawing and critically respond to one's own art and the work of other artists
5. Produce a drawing portfolio using the introductory skills taught.
6. Demonstrate health and safety best practices within the discipline.
Prerequisites:
Students are responsible for purchasing some materials. Please contact faculty for approximate cost of materials and supplies.
