Description: This course introduces the general principles and techniques of sedimentary rock, mineral and fossil identification. Other topics covered include sedimentary environments, tectonic settings and age relations. Completion of both GEOL 1140 and GEOL 1150 are required to count toward MnTC Goal Area 3.

1. 1. Understand sedimentary rock and mineral nomenclature and identification
2. 2. Understand of local geology in particular Minnehaha Falls
3. 3. Explain sedimentary environments and the role tectonic settings play
4. 4. Interpret geologic time through the use of map and cross-section
5. 5. Identify fossils in particular local species that can be used to interpret rock deposition
6. 6. Demonstrate how fossils can be used/misused to interpret environments and to a limited degree behavior over the course of geologic time

Prerequisites: 

Placement score into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052.
