Sound Arts 1: The Nature and Control of Sound (SNDA 1310)

Description:  This course introduces you the technical and aesthetic principles of working creatively with sound. You will learn sound's relationship with its three worlds: acoustic, analog and digital. You will begin by exploring the physics of sound and studying the behavior of waves. You will also be introduced to listening skills and compositional form. These concepts will be applied to your own creative work, primarily in the analog world. This will carry to the analog world with transducers, signal paths and analog recording. The course will conclude with an introduction to digital theory, preparing you for Sound Arts 1320.

Sound Arts 2: Digital Principles of Sound (SNDA 1320)

Description:  This course builds on the foundation laid in Sound Arts 1, particularly in the digital world. You will learn the fundamental principles of working with digital data– first using MIDI, and then digital audio. You will use these digital principles to explore sound processing, synthesis, and sampling. Your skills with signal paths and mixing will also be expanded. Class projects will ask you to widen your aesthetic scope, to explore the variety of work in the field. This course requires extensive work in the on-site Sound Arts labs.

Sound Arts History and Literature (SNDA 1360)

Description:  This course examines the evolution of sound and technology. You will gain an understanding of key developments and their driving forces through listening, analysis, and discussion of historically significant sound work. Works drawn from music, cinema, sound design, and interdisciplinary artwork will be explored. You will trace the developments and relationships between these sound works, artists, collaborators, technology, and the wider culture. You will also greatly expand your listening experience, as well as your analysis and critique skills.

Sound Design for Images (SNDA 1370)

Description:  This course explores the use of sound as an essential narrative component when combined with various visual media; including film, video, photography, motion graphics, virtual reality, painting, theater, dance, animation, games, and multimedia installations. You will apply many of the techniques involved in recording, editing, processing, and creating perspective with sound, while preparing for final mixing and mastering. You will delve into the basics of cinema and multi-media sound theory and history, as well as sound-related terminology and concepts. You will learn techniques to take your own visual work or collaborative sound work with visual artists to the next level of skill and professionalism.

Sound Arts 3: Recording and Digital Production (SNDA 2330)

Description:  This course focuses on the use of the digital world, in depth. You will learn how to manage the advanced technical concerns of digital audio and apply them to all aspects of the production process. Key aspects specific to the digital world, such as project workflow, data formats, and file management will be addressed. You will work on both hardware and software, with an emphasis on transferring knowledge to software tools. You will also learn microphone characteristics, approaches to choosing and positioning them, and stereo techniques. You will demonstrate the ability to achieve a particular sound by combining knowledge of microphones and listening skills. This course requires extensive work in the on-site Sound Arts labs, as well as significant group collaboration outside of class.

Sound Arts 4: Form and Design in Sound (SNDA 2340)

Description:  This course is an experience of the creative production process, from start to finish. You will learn and apply skills in listening, collaboration, critique and compositional form. You will develop the ability to synthesize technical craft and creative decision-making. You will hone these skills to create a portfolio of projects, meeting a variety of challenges. This course will use in-class activities to prepare you for extensive collaborative work outside of class, in the on-campus studios.

Sound Arts 5: Final Project (SNDA 2350)

Description:  This course is the final capstone sound project. You will demonstrate your ability to conceive, plan, produce, and present a major artwork in sound, of your own design. You will connect the fundamental principles taught throughout the program to specific tools and techniques of your choice. You will also have the opportunity to share your work in-progress with the class, in a seminar format. The course will also expand on advanced topics, and you will be introduced to emerging paradigms and cutting-edge technology in the field.

Project Studio Design (SNDA 2370)

Total Credits:  3   Lecture Credits:  3  
Description:  This course examines problems in designing a physical space for professional sound work. You will learn about the complexities of room acoustics, and strategies for controlling them. You will also study the related topics of basic electrical infrastructure, ergonomic concerns, and equipment selection. These elements will be brought together, as you will create a design for a small space, customized to your own needs and interests. Through the design process, you will gain a deeper understanding of the unique challenges in the acoustic world, which intersects with all other sound work.

Internship (SNDA 2380)

Total Credits:  2   Internship/Practicum Credits:  2
Description:  The internship provides you with an opportunity to receive credit for working in some area of the industry. You will explore the wide range of industry work, and hone the professional skills needed to secure your own internship. You will experience a real-world work environment, learn from working professionals, and make contacts in the industry. The internship requires advisor approval but is focused on your own goals and interests.

Sound Arts as Business (SNDA 2390)

Total Credits:  3   Lecture Credits:  3  
Description:  This course examines the prospect of sound work as a career. You will learn to present yourself and your work, hone communication skills, and understand the concerns of being independent artist or technician in the field. You will gain a practical understanding of what being a professional entails and explore how to match industry needs to your own talents and interests. The course will also present a detailed study of intellectual property and copyright topics, relevant to sound. You will learn the systems to protect and profit from your own work, as well as that of collaborators. This will include both the legal concerns, copyright, licensing, sampling as well as an investigation of the creative tensions between business and art.
