Description:  This course is an introduction to the principles of toxicology and how environmental agents, such as pesticides and pollutants, affect human health, specifically in the areas of disease and injury. You will assess your toxicant risk and ecological footprint and use these results to research various methods on how to improve your environmental health, such as sustainable agriculture and green living. This course also explores how you can use the environment to promote health and actually heal the mind and body.

Infectious Diseases: An Application to Everyday Life. (HLTH 2210)

Description:  In this course, you will learn about infectious diseases and disease concepts, with emphasis on prevention and control of infectious diseases in the individual, family and community. You will study a broad spectrum of infectious-disease topics, including disease causes, transmission, outbreaks, and personal and family protection. You will debate the influence of geography, culture, politics and economic factors on infectious diseases. In class, you will discuss common diseases such as influenza, food-borne illnesses, and sexually transmitted diseases; as well as more exotic diseases, such as pandemic influenza, newly emerging diseases, and diseases caused by bioterrorism.

Description:  This hands-on course provides an overview of Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of healing that focuses on bringing balance to the whole person through food-based therapies, yoga, and meditation. You will learn the basic principles of Ayurveda that specify constitutional types. You will also learn how Ayurveda assesses the effects of behavior on health, and understand how Ayurvedic approaches can be applied for living a full and healthy life.

Description:  This course presents information essential for providing emergency care in the event of injury or illness. Course material is specifically designed for those with a job-related duty to act in the event of acute injury or illness. This course fulfills the requirement for those students entering the Law Enforcement program. Effects of Drugs on Children and Adolescent Health (HLTH 2255)

Description:  This course uses the Public Achievement model to take a unique approach to learning the effects of drugs on children and adolescents from a physical, social, emotional, and mental health perspective. You will evaluate addiction theories; gain an understanding of basic licit and illicit drug pharmacology; learn about family dynamics and the role of school and the community in the lives of this population; and develop awareness around the best practices for drug education, interventions and treatments for children and adolescents. Must be taken A-F.
