Description: This course covers selected English literature from the Anglo-Saxon period through the age of Johnson. In studying this period, you will be a witness to major foreign invasions of England and to the evolution of English language and literature, which are both products of interactions between the native populations and the outside world. You will study literary works in their historical, social, and world contexts; engage these works from your own perspective; and gain insight into British culture and how it is the result of ethnic and cultural influences within the British Isles, the European continent, and beyond.

1. A. Discuss and evaluate the achievements in English literature.
2. B. Analyze the interactions between cultures in the British Isles and between England and its growing empire as revealed in literature.
3. C. Know the topics, forms, and styles preferred in the various eras.
4. D. Identify the literary contributions of the various authors, cultural groups, and literary traditions.

Prerequisites: 

ENGL 1110 or ENGA 1110.
