Description: This course offers an analysis of various forms of poetry and their structures. You will use critical thinking procedures to work your way through the elements of poetry, as well as the contexts in which poetry is written. As a result of this course, you will appreciate and enjoy poetry more, while also developing your analytical skills. You will examine a cross-section of poetic styles and eras, and you will read and think critically about poetry from a variety of culturally and ethnically diverse American writers.

Learning Outcomes:
1. A. Demonstrate skills of literary analysis by thinking, writing, and talking about poetry. B. Demonstrate understanding of social contexts for analyzing poetry: history, class, race, gender.
2. C. Define elements of poetry—pattern, image, metaphor, symbol, words, form, persona, tone, irony and paradox, theme, myth and allusion. D. Develop multi-faceted and critical responses that take into account the intellectual, artistic, and emotional power of the poetry.
3. E. Express critical responses to other readers and thinkers in dialogues that construct new knowledge for student and others.
4. F. Practice active learning, peer review, and leadership skills in the classroom.

ENGL 1110 or ENGA 1110.
