Description:
This course provides hands-on training in providing library reference services. You will learn how to conduct effective reference interviews, in order to help users define and meet their information needs. You will be introduced to major reference sources and when and how to use them. You will explore online reference services, reference programming, readers’ advisory services, reference services to children and young adults, and information literacy instruction. You will discuss ethical considerations in reference services and the future of library reference services.
Topical Outline:
1. Introduction to reference services and the role of paraprofessionals in reference departments.
2. Application of reference interviews and library research techniques.
3. Use of various types of reference sources and online search tools to answer questions and match users’ inquiries with the right resource.
4. Introduction to online reference services.
5. Overview of reference programming, readers’ advisory services, reference services to children and young adults, and information literacy instruction.
6. Ethical issues in reference and information services and the future of reference services.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Summarize the roles and expectations of paraprofessionals in providing reference services in different kinds of libraries.
2. Demonstrate reference interview and library research skills, including: effective communication, problem solving, and search techniques.
3. Select and search various types of library reference resources and online search tools to effectively answer user queries. (Examples: encyclopedias, dictionaries and other ready reference resources; law and business reference resources; government information resources; health reference resources; and reference resources that contain information about geography, countries, and/or people.)
4. Analyze and utilize various tools for delivering online reference services (Examples: chat, video, email, online tutorials, research guides.)
5. Explain the role of reference departments in library programming, readers’ advisory, reference services to children and young adults, and information literacy.
6. Discuss ethical considerations in reference services and the future of library reference services.
