Technical Services (LIBT 1200)

Description: This course surveys library technical services: acquisitions, collection development, resource management (with a special attention paid to electronic resources and government documents), cataloging and metadata practice, and collection management. You will understand the role of technical services in the operations of a library or information agency; and how libraries work together to do cooperative work in consortia and associations. You will understand how automation, technology, and vendors interact with people working in technical services operations. You will explore ethical considerations for policies and procedures utilized in technical services work. You will develop knowledge and skill to apply to technical services work.

1. The role of technical services in the operation of a library or information agency.
2. Ethical considerations for policies and procedures utilized in technical services.
3. Acquisitions, collection development, and collection management of physical and electronic resources.
4. Introduction to cataloging and metadata practices in libraries.
5. Use of technology, automation, vendors, and workflow management in technical services.
6. The role of cooperative work and consortia in technical services.

Prerequisites:  Placement into ENGL 1110 or completion of ENGL 0900 or ENGA 0900 or ESOL 0051 or Instructor Approval
Co-requisites:  Recommended LIBT 1100, LIBT 1300, and LIBT 1410
